Is there a ‘good’ and ‘bad’ day to fill up your gas tank? Apparently, there is and it is based on some very good if not practical reasons. We will cut to the chase and tell you when. The best day is Monday, and here’s why.

USA Today recently came out with findings from a just-concluded study. It was conducted using the gas prices app GasBuddy, with the goal of identifying the least expensive days of the week to fuel-up. The results: Most states had Monday as the cheapest day of the week. A few states had a result of Tuesday. Out of the 50 states, only two indicated a result besides Mondays or Tuesdays.

Not surprisingly, weekends yielded a result for the worst days to gas-up your vehicle. Hands down worst were Saturday in the most number of states. TGIF is nothing to be thankful for too when buying gas. Other days to stay away from the pump are Sundays and Thursdays.

The one state exempt from these general results is the Beehive state, Utah. Why? Well being America’s gas price outlier, fuel here is at its cheapest on a Sunday, but at and its priciest on Tuesday. Quite the opposite of most other states.

So that is the WHAT. But WHY? Why is it best to gas-up on Mondays and worse Saturdays? The answer lies in the laws of supply and demand. Based on current weekly lifestyle cycles, folks want to buy fuel on Friday preparatory to weekend plans. It also turns out that Mondays or Tuesdays are not fuelling-up priority days, since the onset of the work week brings with it concerns, none of which include visiting the pump station.

So remember: If you want to save a few cents or even dollars, go buy gas on a Monday (or Tuesday), and please avoid Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Another rule of thumb is always gas–up before Thursday if you have weekend plans that require using your car a lot.
